Ruth Simmons is a highly respected American academic administrator and educator. She is known for being the first African American president of an Ivy League institution, serving as the 18th president of Brown University. She also served as president of Smith College and Prairie View A&M University. Simmons is the recipient of many honors, including a Fulbright Fellowship to France, the 2001 President’s Award from the United Negro College Fund, the 2002 Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, the 2004 Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, the Foreign Policy Association Medal, and the Centennial Medal from Harvard University. Her book, Up Home: One Girl’s Journey, is a New York Times Bestseller.
